Box Score
Boston, Mass. - Senior forward Toya Chester (Leominster, Mass.)
recorded a double-double on 12 points and 12 rebounds and freshman
forward Kia Minor (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) recorded her first career
double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Framingham
State College women's basketball team over host University of
Massachusetts Boston, 48-43, this afternoon to capture the 2009
UMass Boston Tip-off Classic championship at the Clark Athletic
Center on the campus of UMass Boston. This is the second Tip-Off
Classic crown for the Rams, who also captured the title in 2002.
Chester was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player for her
performance over the two games in the tournament. The win improves
Framingham State's record to 2-0 while the loss drops the Beacons
to 1-1.
After four and half minutes of scoreless basketball to open the
game, the Beacons got on the board first on a pair of free throws
by junior guard Kristen Penney (West Roxbury, Mass.) before the
Rams rattled off seven straight points capped by a jumper by
Chester with 12:59 to play in the half, giving the visitors the 7-2
edge. With 9:25 remaining in the first frame, Framingham
State extended its lead to seven on a jumper by freshman forward
Michelle Hagerty (Somerville, Mass.), making it a 15-8 FSC
advantage, but UMass Boston reeled off eight straight points,
including three-pointers from Penney and senior guard/forward
Caroline Ashe (West Roxbury, Mass.). The Beacons led 16-15
with 4:52 left in the opening half for its first lead of the half
since the opening free throws and took a 20-19 margin into the
intermission.
Sophomore forward Emily Clark (Melrose, Mass.) hit the first
shot of the second half to give the Rams a 21-20 lead, but the
Beacons went on a 6-2 run, capped by a Kate Levy (Falmouth, Mass.)
three-pointer to make it a 27-23 contest with 13:30 showing in the
second session for their largest lead of the day. Framingham
State called a timeout and responded with an 8-0 run to give the
Rams a four point edge, 31-27, with 10:51 to play.
Over the next four minutes, UMass Boston was able to keep the
game within reach, preventing the Rams from doing any further
offensive damage by forcing two Ram turnovers. A jumper by
Chester with 2:12 left on the clock put the Rams on top 42-36
before the Beacons were able to fight back and close to within a
point. Ashe started a 5-0 run with a layup in the paint to cut
Framingham's lead to four at 42-38 with 1:41 remaining. Sophomore
forward Molly Piette (Webster, Mass.) stepped up right when the
Beacons needed a clutch shot, connecting on a bomb from downtown to
make it 42-41, FSC, with 1:10 to play. UMass Boston remained
within one with 21 seconds remaining when a baseline jumper by
Penny made it a 44-43 contest, but that would be UMass Boston's
last points of the afternoon. Framingham State closed out the
contest with four free throws to secure the win.
Ashe and Penney both finished the afternoon with 12 points to
lead the Beacons while Levy chipped in with nine points, six
rebounds, and two assists. Both Ashe and Levy were selected to the
All-Tournament team for their efforts over the weekend.
For the Rams, junior guard Nicole McConaghy (Medford, MA)
dropped nine points, dished out three assists, to go along
with two steals and one rebound. McConaghy was named to the
All-Tournament team for her two solid efforts.
