Newton, Mass. - Senior forward Toya Chester (Ayer, Mass.)
notched her third double-double of the season with 22 points and 10
rebounds as the Framingham State College women's basketball team
came from 12 points down in the second half to defeat Mount Ida
College 69-62 in non-conference action tonight. With the win the
Rams pull back to .500 at 4-4, while the Mustangs also even their
record at 6-6.
After the Mustangs opened up an early 11-7 lead, the Rams
responded with a run of their own to open up 21-15 with 9:55 to go
in the half after a three point play by freshman forward Kia Minor
(Oak Bluffs, Mass.).
The game remained close for the rest of the half with Mount Ida
tying the score for the fifth time in the contest on a trifecta by
senior Cherie Parisi (South Attleboro, Mass.) with 3:58 to go
before the break.
The Rams took the lead again, but the Mustangs cut the lead to
one point on an Ashley Boyd (Hanson, Mass.) lay-in with time
expiring to head into the half trailing 37-36.
Mount Ida caught fire to begin the second half as sophomore
Katie Morvan (Northbridge, Mass.), who finished with 24 points, and
10 rebounds, recorded 12 points during the opening stretch to give
the Mustangs a 12 point advantage with 10:54 to go in the game.
The Rams took advantage of several Mount Ida turnovers and used
a 17-5 run to climb back into the game and tie the score at 60-60
with 4:30 remaining. The Rams took the lead for good on a
Jill Johnson (Mansfield, Mass.) free throw with 3:05
remaining.
Framingham State outscored the Mustangs 26-7 over the final
10:54 of the contest.
Chester led three Rams in double figures including junior Nicole
McConaghy (Medford, Mass.) who chipped in 14 points and six
rebounds, while Johnson added 13 points including 7-of-7 from the
free throw line. Minor finished the night with seven points,
seven rebounds and a game and career-high eight steals.
The Rams return to action on Saturday as they begin MASCAC play
at Fitchburg State at 1 p.m.
