Framingham, MA - Senior guard Katie Sylvain (Hadley, MA) scored
a game-high 22 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to lead
the Westfield State College women's basketball team to a 68-50
Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) win
tonight in Framingham over the Rams. With the win the Owls,
who have already secured the 2009 MASCAC Regular Season Title,
remain unbeaten in conference action at 11-0 and improve to 20-3
overall, while the Rams fall to 8-16 overall and finish conference
play at 2-10.
Sylvain, who finished the game 8 of 11 from the field and 5 of 5
from 3-point range, led a trio of Owls in double figures.
Junior forward Molly Brogan and sophomore forward Christal Bello
(West Boylston, MA) came off the bench to score 13 and 10 points
respectively. Junior center Andrea Wasuk (Lenox, MA) added
nine points and six boards for the Owls.
The Rams were led by senior guard Allie Hart (Somerset, MA) who
scored a team-high 15 points including 7 of 8 from the free throw
line, while junior forward Toya Chester (Ayer, MA) added a double
double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Owls opened the game on a 10-0 run over the first seven
minutes to open up a double digit lead that they would not
relinquish. The Owls, led by Sylvain who connected on 5 of 8
from the floor in the first half including 3 of 3 from behind the
arc, shot 41% from the floor in the first half (11-27), while they
held the Rams to just 19% shooting from the field as they opened up
a 33-19 lead at the break.
In the second half the Owls would extend their lead to as many
as 22 points as they continued their hot shooting. The Owls
connected on 4 of 10 from long range in the second half, while the
Rams shot only 20% from behind the arc in the game. Westfield
State's bench outscored the Rams bench 33-10 in the game and 19-6
in the second half alone en route to the win.
The Rams close out their season on Thursday night at Suffolk at
6 p.m., while the Owls host Fitchburg State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
