Framingham, Mass. - The Framingham State College ice hockey team
battled back from a four goal deficit to tie the game and force
overtime where they were defeated 5-4 by Fitchburg State in
Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) ice hockey
action at Loring Arena tonight. With the win the Falcons
improve to 2-0-1 on the season and 1-0 in the MASCAC, while the
Rams fall to 0-3-1 overall and 0-2 in conference.
Fitchburg State scored two goals in each of the first two
periods to open up a 4-0 lead. Freshman Chris Costigan
(Salem, N.H.) scored at 1:55 and senior Andrew Hutton (Brewster,
Mass.) scored at 14:07 in the first with Christopher Brecken
(Hudson, Mass.) and Erik Trahan (Manville, R.I.) picking up
assists.
John Vets (Hamden, Conn.) added his third goal of the year at
3:29 of the second and Kris Threlkeld (Centerville, Ohio) scored
his first of the year to give the Falcons a comfortable lead with
12:17 remaining in the second period.
The Rams began chipping away at the lead and cut it back to
three under a minute later as freshman Nick Calma (Simi Valley, CA)
scored his first collegiate goal on a shot from the point.
Blair Nickerson (Beverly, Mass.) and Jason Anderson (Arden Hills,
MN) assisted on the goal.
Framingham State kept chipping away in the third as Calma scored
his second of the game just 1:52 into the third pulling the Rams
within two. Sophomore Nicholas Jackson (Las Vegas, NV) pulled
the Rams within one with his first goal of the season off an assist
from Nickerson at 6:12.
Fitchburg State was able to maintain the one goal lead until the
closing minutes. The Rams, who were playing with an open net,
had a two man advantage after a Fitchburg penalty and were able to
capitalize. Senior Josh Williams (Upper Marlboro, MD) fired a
shot from the point that found the back of the net for an
unassisted power play goal with 41 seconds left to tie the game.
Just 1:52 into the overtime Fitchburg State's Thomas McAleer
(East Islip, N.Y.) scored the game winner for the Falcons.
Sophomore Terence Sullivan (Shirley, Mass.) made 33 saves in a
losing effort, while Bobby Leiser (Monroe, N.Y.) made 32 saves for
the Falcons.
The Rams return to action on Saturday evening as they travel to
Worcester State for a 4:30 p.m. game, while the Falcons host Salem
State on Saturday at 7 p.m.
