Don Spellman begins his ninth year as head coach of the
Framingham State men's basketball team. Under Coach Spellman the
Rams have become one of the best team in the conference.
The Rams traditionally play one of the toughest schedules in the
region. Last season Framingham State played 11 games against teams
that qualified for the NCAA Tournament. Eight of those games were
against teams that reached the Sweet 16. The Rams received a
bid to the 2008-09 ECAC New England Men's Basketball
Championship as the fifth seed.
In Spellman's first eight seasons, he has guided the Rams to the
MASCAC Tournament finals twice. In his first season as head coach,
the Rams were one of the best defensive teams in New England and
reached the MASCAC finals for only the second time in school
history. In 2005, Spellman was named the MASCAC Coach of the Year
as the Rams finished second in the MASCAC with the best record
since 1991 and once again made it to the conference finals.
Under Coach Spellman, Framingham is known for its tenacity on
defense and its toughness. As a team the Rams are always among the
league and regional leaders in scoring and field goal percentage
defense. The Rams finished the 2004-05 season ranked 1st
in the Northeast region and 10th in the nation in field
goal percentage defense. In the last eight years Coach
Spellman has coached two MASCAC Rookies of the Year and and six
all-conference players, three of whom have been honored in multiple
seasons.
Prior to becoming head coach of the Rams, Spellman was an
assistant coach at Framingham State for four years. He has coached
at the high school and AAU level since his graduation from Suffolk
University where he played his collegiate ball under Jim Nelson. He
has coached AAU teams with former Boston Celtics Head Coach John
Carroll that has won three State and two New England Championships.
He currently resides in West Roxbury, MA.
Tom Nelson is in his third season as an assistant coach with the
Framingham State men's basketball program. Nelson is
responsible for the coordinating the Rams offense, recruiting and
film breakdown. Last season, he helped guide the Rams to
their first ECAC Tournament appearance.
Prior to arriving at FSC, Nelson was spent time as both an
assistant coach and head coach at Dean College from
2003-2007. During his tenure at Dean, the team won a Region
21 Championship. He helped produce several all-conference
players as well as two student-athletes who went on to play
Division III basketball in the MASCAC. He also coaches
several players who went on to play at Division II institutions.
Nelson was raised in Los Angeles, California and played his
collegiate ball at the College of the Holy Cross in
Worcester. He began coaching in 2002 for Mass. AAU with
Holliston High School coach Tom Keough and continues to coach AAU
and run basketball clinics.
